It is common for you not to find a specific cause for tinnitus, or a cause that may be treatable.

If there is a treatable cause, tinnitus or tinnitus may improve with the treatment of that cause. If not, there are cases that improve with a diet (usually low in carbohydrates, sometimes it is useful to restrict dairy or gluten, although there are not many studies in this regard).

Although there is a lot of propaganda around some supplements and products that promise to make tinnitus disappear, they are not usually useful and they only mean a waste of money and time. On the other hand, a professional of the audiology can carry out a complete study and look for an individualized treatment that allows to provide relief to the person suffering from tinnitus.

Some of the treatments that can be used in people suffering from tinnitus are:

  • Sound therapy: a tinnitus sound generator (similar to or associated with a hearing aid) and other noise generators (such as a television or radio) produces a background noise that helps reduce the intensity of tinnitus. It is about finding a noise that resembles tinnitus so that the brain does not detect it. Thus, each time will be given less importance to tinnitus to get used to it.
  • Tinnitus retraining therapy: in this case the person is helped to understand and know their tinnitus, to better control the negative responses associated with it, and thus to give it less and less importance.
