Loperamide hydrochloride is a drug used to treat diarrhea.

This leads to slowing the movement of the small intestine muscles to allow more water to be extracted from the stool and absorb more nutrients.

Loperamide is an opioid and a synthetic derivative of piperidine. It is an effective drug against diarrhea caused by gastroenteritis or inflammatory bowel disease. Loperamide is a haloperidol derivative that adheres to the opiate receptor of the intestinal wall, decreasing the release of chemical mediators and peristalsis; it also acts on the circular and longitudinal muscle fibers of the intestine; It does not have analgesic activity. Loperamide prolongs evacuation time, increases the viscosity of feces, reduces daily fecal volume and reduces the loss of fluids and electrolytes.

The dose in adults can be treated initially during the diarrheal crisis of 4 mg per dose, followed by 2 mg after each deposition until reaching a maximum of 16 mg per day.

This medicine should not be given if you have a fever or if the stools show traces of blood. It is not convenient to take this medication for more than 48 hours, in no case should be administered to children under 6 years of age without consulting a specialist. During your administration, water should be consumed, to avoid dehydration.

A medication with this property is DiarrhoeaRelief.
