Alterations in the taste of cancer patients can be due to different causes, such as medications, radiation or even dental problems.

When they experience these taste changes, weight loss may appear, or they may notice a certain rejection of specific foods. When they receive chemotherapy, patients experience a bitter sensation. It is therefore advisable to consume plenty of fluids, change the types of food consumed and add spices or flavorings (flavor enhancers, such as sweeteners) to food.

These are some recommendations to alleviate these changes in taste:

  • Rinse the mouth with water before meals.
  • Try citrus fruits such as oranges, tangerines or lemons.
  • Eat your favorite foods.
  • Eat cold or warm foods to prevent odors and reduce their flavor.
  • Cook with soft foods such as basil, mint, oregano, rosemary, thyme, laurel, fennel, marjoram, orange or lemon juice.
  • Replace red meat with poultry, fish, eggs and cheese.
  • Add spices and sauces to foods.
  • Eat when you are hungry and not compulsorily at the established times, as long as you carry out the necessary meals.
  • Eat with family and friends.
  • Use sugar-free lemon candies, gum or mints when they have a metallic or bitter taste.

Advice in case of noticing metallic taste in food:

  • Choose strong flavors such as cured cheese, ham, etc.
  • If the meat is not tolerated, replace it with other foods rich in proteins: fish, seafood, cheese, eggs, legumes, soja …
  • Enhance the taste of foods with different sauces: béchamel sauce, mayonnaise, egg-based sauces, cream, or the like.
  • Drink mint tea or lemon.
  • Eliminate the strange flavors in the mouth through mouthwashes and candy and chewing gum.
  • Use plastic cutlery.
  • Use wooden utensils for cooking.
  • Avoid contact of acidic products (vinegar, fruit juices, tomatoes.) With metal containers, as they facilitate the dissolution of the latter (some stainless steel pans release nickel in contact with acidic foods).
